The Enhanced Modified Faraday Cup (EMFC) beam analyzer
The EMFC is an electron beam (EB) diagnostic tool developed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and is licensed to SciMet, LLC for manufacture and sales. The EMFC measures and analyzes the power density distribution of both sharp and defocused electron beams used for welding. The beam analysis provides quality control in order to repeat the same weld on multiple components over a period of time, or transfer electron beam parameters from one machine to another.
Operationally, the EMFC probes the electron beam using a series of radial slits machined into a circular disk. As the beam rapidly circles over the slits, beam profile data are acquired at a multitude of angles. Computed tomography (CT) algorithms are then used to reconstruct the beam properties from the multiple profiles for rapid beam analysis. The beam parameters, including the peak power density, beam diameter, and its full width at half maximum (FWHM), are calculated and recorded for quality control purposes. Post processing of the data is used to create 3D images of the beam as shown below.
